One of the better builds for the Great Sword is going to be a Critical Hit build with a variety of low-level to high-level Active Skills that allow the weapon to deal as much damage as possible when you strike the monster.

Finding the Right Armor and Weapon
The most important part of the build is finding the correct armor combination and the right weapon for you.
The first and most important part of using the Great Sword is finding the right version of the weapon to use while on a hunt. While the Artian Weapons aren’t going to be overwhelmingly amazing, they are more specialized in what you can do with them. Here, you can pick the element that you prefer to use the most for your weapons. When making an Artian Weapon, you can’t go wrong with Paralysis, Poison, Sleep, or Dragon element types.
You’ll need three parts to start building an Artian Great Sword. Two Broken Blades and a Crushed Tube are going to be what makes up a Great Sword Artian Weapon. You will want to pick up three that correspond to your preferred element and ensure that they have an attack infusion. This will allow you to maximize how much damage the weapon is going to do once it is leveled up completely later on. When your weapon has been built, you will have the Varianza Great Sword, and you will need to Reinforce it to level 5.

Increases the affinity of attacks that exploit a monster’s weak points and wounds.
Guardian Arkveld Vambraces B
Guardian Arkveld Coil B
Makes it easier to inflict wounds. Upon inflicting enough damage, it also deals additional non-elemental damage.
Dahaad Shardgreaves B
Chain Charm II
Continuously landing hits gradually increases attack and elemental attack. (Amount increased depends on weapon.)
Corrupted Mantle
Decreases health, but increases affinity and weapon performance while equipped. Repeated attacks on monsters will further increase your attack power and affinity.
These pieces of equipment will provide you with the best building blocks for some Equipment Skills. While the Helmet will only be at Rarity 6, it will have the correct skills associated with it that will help with every hunt you go on.
Choosing the Right Decorations
Building the armor and weapons is only half of what you need to do; next, you’ll need to choose the decorations for your gear.
Armor Decoration
While picking out the best decorations, you do have some freedom in what will work best for you as a player. There are a few must-haves, like theMightyand theChallengerJewels. These two types are going to increase yourAgitatorandMaximum MightSkills to the highest level possible. The Agitator Skill at the maximum level will provide a+20%bonus to attack and a+15%affinity while active during a monster’s enrage phase. With full stamina, the Maximum Might Skill will provide a further30%bonus to affinity.
For the weapon, Varianza, you will want theFocus/Handicraft Jewel[3]to increase your charge speed to attack with your hardest-hitting attacks as often as possible. The twoCritical Jewelsat rank 2 or 3 will be what will increase your critical hit damage by a significant amount. A rank 2 jewel paired with a rank 3 jewel will increase your critical hit damage by40%, giving your critical hits a massive boost with a fully leveled Great Sword. If you don’t have a rank 3 Critical Jewel you can still pair two of the rank 2 jewels for a37%damage boost, which is still a very nice boost in power to your hits.
With all of these Active Skills compiled into your armor and weapon, you’ll be able to have several max-level skills mixed in with a variety of lower-level ones that will provide some quality of life bonuses. Some of the armor decorations, like the Sheath Jewel and the Growth Jewel, have some wiggle room. You can slot in anything that will work best for you, allowing you to gain some new Active Skills and make this build your own.
