Destinycelebrates its 10th anniversary, and Bungie is marking the occasion by announcing the future of the game, which will continue with a new model of two expansions per year and free updates.
The Future of Destiny 2
The future of Destiny 2 is a concern for players of this MMO shooter, especially after the worrying events at Bungie, which have not gone unnoticed by fans, with the layoff of 220 people this summer.
Rumors about the cancellation of a Destiny expansion or spin-off — which some even considered to be Destiny 3 — and the uncertainty surrounding their next game, the extraction shooter Marathon, have grown following the failure of Concord.
It hasn’t been a good period for Bungie, but the good news is that the company is committed to continuing support for Destiny 2. The bad news, though understandable, is that it will no longer be with expansions like before, but with a different type of updates.
Two Expansions Per Year and Four Content Updates
Bungie made an announcement today, celebrating ten years since the launch of the first Destiny, one of the most ambitious games of its generation that became one of the most successful, though it required a lot of work to improve and evolve. Starting next year, Destiny 2 will adopt a new model of two expansions and four major free content updates per year.
Additional content will continue, both free and paid via expansions, but not with traditional campaigns like The Final Shape, instead opting for a non-linear narrative.
The code name for this future plan is Frontiers, but Bungie has already released the roadmap for its first year under this model.
The first of the two expansions in 2025 will be released in the summer of 2025, called Apollo. There will be two free updates, one in summer and another in fall.
The second expansion will arrive in the winter of 2025, called Behemoth, with its two free updates launching in winter 2025 and spring 2026.
Bungie promises that this combination of paid expansions and free updates (with a rewards pass) will be accompanied by innovations in game systems and significant improvements in activities and major rewards.
But focusing on today, Destiny’s tenth anniversary, Bungie has released a nostalgic armor set for each class, inspired by the original concept designs, which can be found at the Tower of the Lost City in The Pale Heart.
Players will also be able to complete a series of challenges to earn the legendary seal and title, featuring the game’s tenth anniversary logo.
On the other hand, in the real world, Bungie has organized three exhibitions with art, sculptures, and merchandise for sale in three cities: Los Angeles, New York, and London, commemorating the ten years of Destiny, which Bungie will continue to support in the future.
