While plot details for theI Know What You Did Last Summerlegacy sequel remain under wraps, we’re now learning that the reboot will not focus onFreddie Prinze Jr.andJennifer Love Hewitt’s characters. The two will reprise their roles as Ray Bronson and Julie James from the original film and its 1998 sequel, but according to Prinze Jr., he and Hewiitt are"not the leads of the movie by any stretch of the imagination.“Prinze Jr. recently appeared onScale Talk Podcast with David Miniatures, where he discussed how co-writer and director Jennifer Kaytin Robinson (Do Revenge) integrated Julie and Ray into the upcoming movie.
“[Kaytin Robinson] just took such good care of Love’s character, Julie James, and my character, Ray Bronson. They’re not the leads of the movie by any stretch of the imagination,” Prinze Jr. explains in his new chat with the show.” He added: “[Kaytin Robinson] made them such a powerful pushing forward of the other cast. It’s not like, ‘Oh, here’s the Ray and Julie movie that we deserve.’ That doesn’t even make sense. That guy’s dead. So it has to be new generation. And the way she sort of laces us in there with them is just beautifully done. The script is wonderfully written.”

1997’sI Know What You Did Last Summer(based on Lois Duncan’s novel of the same name) stars Hewitt, Prinze Jr., Sarah Michelle Gellar, Ryan Phillippe, Johnny Galecki, and the late Anne Heche, and follows four friends who are terrorized by a mysterious hook-wielding figure who knows about a dark secret between the teens. The slasher, directed by Jim Gillespie, became a box office hit, but failed to impress critics. Despite the latter, the movie amassed a cult following.
The Return of Julie and Ray May Not Be as Big as Fans Hope
The 1998 sequel, titledI Still Know What You Did Last Summerand directed by Danny Cannon, expanded Ray and Julie’s story, with Hewitt and Prinze Jr.’s characters returning, now engaged. The two did not return for the next installment of the franchise,I’ll Always Know What You Did Last Summer, which received overwhelmingly negative reviews after a straight-to-video release. A Prime Video series named after the first film aired for one season in 2021.
The return of Prinze Jr. and Hewitt to theI Know What You Did Last Summerfranchise after more than two decades promises to be a nostalgic treat for fans of the original film. Wecan’t wait to see where Ray and Julie are nowand what transpired between them followingI Still Know What You Did Last Summer(seriously, are they still together?). Prinze Jr. and Hewitt are joined by a talented cast that includes Billy Campbell, Chase Sui Wonders, Madelyn Cline, Sarah Pidgeon, Tyriq Withers, Jonah Haur-King, Lola Tung, Nicholas Alexander Chavez, Austin Nichols, and Gabbriette, who are all newcomers to the series.

TheI Know What You Did Last Summerrevival, which is currently untitled, will land in theaters on June 23, 2025. It is produced by Neal Moritz and released by Sony Pictures. Kaytin Robinson directs from a script written by her and Sam Lansky.
