For the first time in 18 years, HBO is not leading the pack with Emmy nominations this year. Instead, that honor goes to Netflix, who has a total of 112 nominations compared to HBO’s 108. That being said, HBO’sGame of ThronesandWestworldare the shows with the most nominations with 22 and 21, respectively. NBC’sSaturday Night Livealso nabbed 21 nominations as well. Hulu’sHandmaid’s Taleis next on the list with an impressive 20 nominations.
Out of HBO’s Emmy nominations, nearly half of them are fromWestworldandGame of Thrones, whereas Netflix does not have any of its shows in the top ten for most nominations, but has a wider variety of shows with nominations. The number will more than likely grow forNetflixsince they’re about to spend $8 billion on original programming over the next year. FX drew 50 nominations, the most of any basic cable channel and NBC led all broadcast networks with 78 nominations, 21 of which were nominations coming fromSaturday Night Livealone.
Game of Thronesalong withThe Handmaid’s Tale,The Americans,The Crown,Stranger Things,This Is Us, andWestworldare all up for the Best Drama Emmy Award. The Leading Actress in a Drama nominees include Elisabeth Moss fromThe Handmaid’s Tale, who won the award last year for the same series. Moss is joined by Claire Foy fromThe Crown, Keri Russell fromThe Americans, Evan Rachel Wood fromWestworld, Tatiana Maslany fromOrphan Black, and Sandra Oh fromKilling Eve.
Westworldsees two Leading Actor in a Drama Emmy Award nominations with Jeffrey Wright and Ed Harris. Harris and Wright were brought up from the supporting category last year to the main category this year. NBC’sThis Is Usalso has two nominees in the Leading Actor in a Drama category with Milo Ventimiglia and last year’s winner Sterling K. Brown. Matthew Rhys joins hisThe Americansco-star Keri Russell with a nomination. Rounding out the Leading Actor category this year is Jason Bateman from Netflix’sOzark.
As for the Emmy Award for Best Comedy Series,Atlanta,Barry,Black-ish,Curb Your Enthusiasm,GLOW,The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel,Silicon Valley, andThe Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidtwere all nominated. The Emmy award for Leading Actor in a Comedy nominees are Donald Glover forAtlanta, Bill Hader forBarry, Anthony Anderson forBlack-ish, William H. Macy forShameless, Larry David forCurb Your Enthusiasm, and Ted Danson forThe Good Place. As for the Leading Actress in a Comedy, Pamela Adlon forBetter Things, Rachel Brosnahan forThe Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, Tracee Ellis Ross forBlack-ish, Allison Janney forMom, Lily Tomlin forGrace and Frankie, and Issa Rae forInsecurewere all nominated.
