Infected Shelter: Starter Guide & Tips

Infected Sheltercan be a challenge if players haven’t had much experience with rogue-likes or if they haven’t gotten into the rhythm. Join me as I provide plenty of starter tips to help guide you in perfecting your runs amidst the chaos!

Basic Combat

It would be wise to undertake the tutorial upon starting the game as it explains how to play the game as well as provides players with some extra goodies. Even if you have completed the tutorial previously, it doesn’t hurt to start your run with the tutorial to get rewarded with extra items if you need them.

I suggest newer players use the Grab and Throw move since this will spin the enemy around, hitting other enemies in the process, as well as throwing them for more damage. For birds and other aerial enemies, jump in the air and attack with square to quickly eliminate them.

Use your skills often as they will deal a good amount of damage and remember to take it slow. Attempt to eliminate the few enemies on your screen first instead of aggro-ing all the enemies in that section, at least until you are comfortable with the game. Last tidbit, you may roll in the air so don’t forget to take advantage of this!

Focus on Improvements First & Be Wary of Traits

Improvements are passive innate buffs that will be active in your runs. These become active as soon as you purchase them, so these are the first things you will want to unlock, using your infected samples currency obtained from enemies. Improvements may include but are not limited to:

Traits are locked until players defeat their first boss and then each time they select a character each one will have a random trait assigned. These traits can hurt or help you depending on the ones you pick from the ones available. Some are better than others; pick wisely.

Know Your Stats & Playstyle

Knowing the difference in stats between the different characters is also useful as this will help who to choose to suit your preferred playstyle:

Each character has their own set of attributes depending which you will pick, each attribute can be explained in the following way:

Rescue Your Fellow Shelter-mates

There are 5 fellow shelter-mates that you may find during your travels. They will be trapped in cages which you must destroy to free them. You’ll see them back at the shelter the next time you start a new run. They will assist you in future runs as each person is in charge of certain randomized wares. These wares consist of:

Use It or Lose It

Unless players has the improvement that stores a certain amount of Golden Badges after a run, you’ll lose them as well as your infected samples. During a run you’ll see some shops open after all enemies are cleared in that section. Players will use their Golden Badges to purchase consumables items and relics. The shop also provides 3 free weapons so its best to always check them out especially when first starting out.

Each run consists of a checkpoint for reaching 50% of the way and one right before the boss. This allows the player to purchase upgrades from the Chief with their infected sample currency, and the ability to heal for up to 60 HP. Always spend all your samples here in the following priority:

Each item you purchase from the chief will automatically drop after closing his dialogue box. This adds some strategy as you’re able to purchase a strong weapon before a boss or a clutch improvement before a tough segment. This can offset some bad RNG but its usefulness will taper off as more skills are acquired.

Use the Environment!

Throughout the game there will be abandoned cars that when attacked enough will explode, and causing damage to everyone near it. Use these to your advantage during your early career. Scattered in the world will be plenty of trashcans, barrels, and other objects that can be picked up to be used as weapons! These will come in handy starting out as they deal more damage than you will be able to deal early on.

In addition, use the different times of day to bolster your attacks. During nighttime and with the Nightseeing relic you’re able to deal some extra damage!

Hopefully these tips will get you going in Infected Shelter, providing a smoother experience on your first few runs. If you want to see what we thought of Infected Shelter, be sure to check out ourInfected Shelter: Early Access Preview.
