What Is the Unwritten Rule for Spoilers?
Last week there was a debate online aboutthe use of cellphones and overall movie theater etiquettethat quickly devolved into name-calling, as these things often do. The newDeadpool & Wolverinetrailer brings to light another hotly debated topic that’s sure to get some attention once more: that being the rule for spoilers. While we live in a society that has copyright protection for various works of art, there’s nothing on the books when it comes to spoilers, and as such, we’ve had to come up with our own unwritten rules to abide by.
Unfortunately, not everyonehas been able to agree on what those rules are. There are some that just can’t help themselves and spoil everything as soon as they’re out of a movie (we call those people a**holes), while others wait a couple of days for the benefit of those that didn’t get to see something on opening night. The more civilized folks in society wait a week before dipping their toes into spoilers, while some saintly figures wait as much as two weeks before they start talking about something online. God bless those people.

So what arethe unwritten rules for spoilers as they exist now?According to a survey done byAll About Cookiesin September 2023,the consensus is to wait five days before spoiling a TV show, and seven days for a movie. Based on 1,000 people they spoke to, only about one in four wanted to know specific details before going into a theater, while more than one in eight people had actually called off work to see a movie on opening day to avoid spoilers online. According to their survey, spoilers have even been the death of friendships, as 15% of people they spoke to admitted that they had a friendship or relationship come to an end because of a movie or TV show that was ruined for them.

Again, while there’s no law about spoilers, it’s important to be a decent human being and have some consideration for others. We know that’s tough for some of you to do, but in the interest of hanging onto what little civility we have left, it’s a good rule of thumb to at least post a warning before you start revealingthe identity of Lady Deadpool, okay?
