Amazon prohibited the main cast from playing Sega’s video games to ensure that the performances were as authentic and natural as possible, uninfluenced by the original material. This approach sought to give the actors the freedom to dive deeper into their characters more independently.

“I know these games, everyone knows them. But I haven’t played them. I would like to try them, but they had to stop me because they wanted, for the script’s character, to explore from scratch. That’s why I decided not to play,” explained Ryoma Takeuchi, who plays Kazuma Kiryu in the series.
