Monster Hunter Wilds Long Sword Build- In this Monster Hunter Wilds Long Sword Build guide, I am going to show you my beginner build for theLong SwordandGreat Sword, which are one of the easier beginner weapons out of all the weapon options you get. This build will be using the Long Sword as the primary weapon, providing you with both excellent reach and great mobility. The Great Sword will be out secondary weapon for its high damage output and its Power Clashes, which are great for toppling monsters.

Monster Hunter Wilds Long Sword Build for Beginners

This Monster Hunter Wilds Long Sword Build focuses on overall versatility, prioritising fast recovery speed and more forgiving margin of error when getting hit by teammates or small creatures, perfect for when things get chaotic during hunts. This build will be great for you if you havent played any monster hunter games before, as the Long Sword is generally a great choice for easing new players into the game with an easy to set up build that you can prepare within the first hour of the game.

This build is specifically aimed towards newcomers and the main strength of this setup lies in its ability to provide you with the rapid recovery needed when you take hits.

Monster Hunter Wilds Long Sword Build - Weapons

The weapon I am using in this Monster Hunter Wilds Long Sword Build is theQuematrice Lapia ILong Sword for the primary weapon and theQuematrice Espada IGreat Sword for the secondary weapon.

We use the Quematrice weapon tree primarily for its fire elemental damage, which is great to start off with since nearly every early-game monster (aside from the Quematrice itself) is vulnerable to fire. This makes navigating the initial hours much easier with at least one fire-based weapon.

Additionally, the Quematrice tree also has thePunishing Drawweapon skill, which boosts damage for draw attacks, which are attacks done immediately after unsheathing your weapon. For the Long Sword, an example of a Draw Attack that would get a damage boost would be the Iai Slash.

When hunting the Quematrice or other monsters that are resistant to fire later in the game, there a few alternative weapons you may get from the Expedition tree. For the Long Sword, keeping the upgraded Great Sword optionHope Blade IIas a backup will help. If you want to try using the Great Sword as your primary, then the upgraded Long SwordHope Edge IIwill also help you handle these encounters more effectively.

Additionally, the Expedition tree weapons will give theSpeed Sharpeningskill, which will shorten the time you spend using the whetstone to sharpen your weapons.

Monster Hunter Wilds Long Sword Build - Armor

For the Armor, we set up this Monster Hunter Wilds Long Sword Build with 3 pieces of theChatacabra Set, using theChatacabra Helm,Chatacabra Mail,Chatacabra Coilpieces and 2 pieces of theQuematrice Set, for theQuematrice BracesandQuematrice Greaves.

The 3 piece Chatacabra armor set will provide you with theSpeed Eatingbuff which will greatly improve the speed at which you consume your items such as potions and antidotes. Level 3 speed eating is great for new players and veterans since it turns your healing items from slow to instantaneous, which can make a huge difference when fighting hyper aggresive monsters. It also helps with missing the timing on your counter attacks or missing your dodges, since you wont be stuck in a healing animation during these windows.

The Quematrice armor will provide you with theFlinch Freeskill, which prevents knockbacks from attacks. This skill will make getting hit much more forgiving, allowing you to learn the timing of monster attacks much easier without fear of getting interrupted either by teammates or small creatures while you are hunting.

To get this armor combination going you’ll need 1Chatacabra Certificate, 6Chatacabra Scales, 2Chatacabra Jaws, 2Chatacabra Hideand 1Chatacabra Shellfrom theChatacabra. The sharp fang can be obtained from small monsters on the map. From theQuematrice, you’ll need to get 4Quematrice Scales, 2Quematrice Hide, 1Quematric Igniterand 1Quematrice Crest.

These materials are not hard to come by and are easy to farm early on with the new wound feature in Monster Hunter Wilds. By targeting and destroying wounds on specific monster parts, you’ll obtain the corresponding item. For instance, if you’re hunting a Chatacabra and break the wound on its head, you’ll get a Chatacabra Jaw from that attack.

In the early stages, Talismans aren’t available, but you’ll eventually unlock them, so I’ve included them in this Monster Hunter Wilds Long Sword Build. Once you do, you can enhance your setup by equipping an elemental resistance talisman that matches the monster you’re hunting (for instance, a Water resistance talisman for Uth Dora or a Thunder resistance talisman for Rey Dau). If you want more levels into the Speed Eating skill so you can equip some other armor, you can also consider using theGlutton’s Charm I.

This way you’re able to use three pieces of the Quematrice Set for some extra fire resistance while keeping the max skill level of speed eating and max skill level of flinch free.

Monster Hunter Wilds Long Sword Build -Drawbacks

The main drawback of this Monster Hunter Wilds Long Sword Build is that this is purely a beginner set and you will need to upgrade your armor value with armor spheres as soon as they become available. Another drawback to look out for is that it provides little to no resistance to elemental attacks, with some fire resistance from the Quematrice armor and negative resistance to thunder and ice. You won’t be seeing many elemental monsters early, but you will eventually face monsters with such elements, especially thunder.

Progression Route

In terms of progression for this Monster Hunter Wilds Long Sword Build, you’ll have multiple Long Sword options to move into once you’ve reached Hunter Rank 3. The first one I recommend going into is theUth Khlunda I, which you can unlock after facing the Uth Duna for the first time.

Alternatively, you can also try out a Longsowrd status effect build with theBarina Flamberge Iin the LaLa Barina Tree. This Long Sword will provide you with the paralyze status effect, which temporarily immobilises monsters, and is fairly easy to apply with the Long Sword against early and mid game monsters.

If you want to progress into using Great Swords, you’re able to transition to the Doshaguma Tree for the added damage and pure physical prowess with theDosha Fellslayer I.

Or if you want to retain your Fire elemental damage, you can keep using the Quematrice tree as you can upgrade the Great Sword to theQuematrice Espada II.

In terms of armor, as you progress and get more accustomed to the monsters’ attacks and the dodge timings and windows, you can eventually swap out the Chatacabra set for other skills you might want or for the elemental resistances of certain armor sets. For example, you can swap the helm of the Chatacabra armor with theQuematrice Helmto get both the max level of Flinch Free and the Quematrice armor set bonus calledScaling Prowess, unlocking the skillMaster Mounter. Master Mounter makes it easier for you to mount Monsters after a dismounting attack or when attack from height such as a cliff.

Final Tips

This Monster Hunter Wilds Long Sword Build is designed to help beginners and newcomers with their initial learning curve by making the mistakes you make much more forgiving, providing quick recovery times, minimal knockback when attacked and fast consumables. However, even though the recovery time is fast, you cannot face tank every attack the monsters throw at you, so learning the dodge timings and attack patterns will still be important as this build will not mitigate that damage.

For Long Sword users, the Iai spirit slash [(RT) or (R2) after special sheathe (RT + A or R2 + X)] and the foresight slash (RT + B or R2 + circle) are great counter attack options to learn which will let you avoid incoming damage if you can get the timing down. The timings can be intimidating at first, but they aren’t too difficult once you really get into it. The fast recovery of this build helps when you get these counter timings wrong, so you can use this to your advantage to nail the timing in your hunts.

Additionally, the Long Sword in Monster Hunter Wilds received a powerful new finisher, the spirit release slash (RT or R2) which can be done after the traditional spirit helm (Y or Triangle) after landing a spirit thrust (RT + Y or R2 + Triangle), dealing a massive amount of damage. Do not forget to use this and, remember that you can use the new focus mode to aim the attack.

One last thing to note when using a Long Sword is that once you’ve reached the red spirit level and gain access to the crimson slash combo, the crimson slashes will make more wounds on the monster compared to your normal slashes. A good trick is to use your crimson slashes to attack the monster as much as you can at this level before the gauge goes down to around the midpoint, and at that point you can use the spirit helm into full release slash combo finisher for maximum damage with your combos.

For the Great Sword Users, the addition of the offset rising slash (Hold Y + B or Triangle + Circle) provides it with an amazing counter attack option that can open huge windows and deal massive amounts of damage. This build will allow you to learn the timing to land these offset attacks by providing you with a fast recovery option for times when you miss the attack. Also perfect guarding and power clashes will provide you with the huge windows for big charged strikes.

Another useful tip is that after you’ve broken a wound on the monster with the focus strike, you can immediately follow up with a true charged strike skipping the first two charge levels, allowing you to deal huge damage quickly.

Lastly, the armor setup is viable to use with any of the 14 different weapons in the game when you are starting out due to its ability to provide fast recovery and item consumption.
