Summary

A newSt. Elmo’s Firemovie could be in the works. The original 1985 cult classic movie was directed by Joel Schumacher and followed a group of young people who have a variety of reactions to being newly thrust into adulthood after they graduate from Georgetown University. Along with the stars ofThe Breakfast Club, theSt. Elmo’s Firecastdefined the Brat Pack, a group of young actors who frequently collaborated on teen and new adult movies in the mid to late 1980s.

PerDeadline, Sony iscircling the possibility of making a newSt.Elmo’s Firemovie. Instead of being a reboot, the movie would be a form of sequel or legacy sequel. Because of this, its production would be contingent on the ability to reunite the entire main cast, namely Jonathan McCarthy, Rob Lowe, Demi Moore, Emilio Estevez, Judd Nelson, Ally Sheedy, and Mare Winningham. There is no word as to whether any of the group of actors has yet been contacted about the project.

Will The New St. Elmo’s Fire Movie Happen?

Reuniting The Brat Pack May Prove Difficult

It seems that the talks about a newSt. Elmo’s Firemovie have come about because of the popularity of the recentBrat Pack documentaryBrats, which premiered on Hulu on June 13 and ignited a resurgence of interest in the stars and their 1980s output. However, one core element of the project, which was directed by Andrew McCarthy himself, is the fact thatmany of the stars involved chafed against being dubbed Brat Packers. In fact, several, including Judd Nelson, did not appear in the documentary at all.

Because of this tension, itseems unlikely that the entire group would agree to be involved in the new movie. However, they have never been closer to a full reunion, considering how many of them agreed to be interviewed for Brats. Of the cast members cited byDeadline, only Nelson and Mare Winningham did not participate in the project. While it did not require them to reunite onscreen, their willingness to discuss their 1980s work could mean that many of the cast of the documentary could be willing to consider reprising their iconic roles.

Mare Winningham is generally not technically considered part of the Brat Pack because she didn’t collaborate with any other members outside ofSt. Elmo’s Fireduring the 1980s.

It remains to be seen if the new version ofSt. Elmo’s Firecould get made with just a partial cast. However, if producers stick to their determination to keep the entire ensemble together, holdouts like Nelson may prevent the modern follow-up to theBrat Pack moviefrom getting made. Ultimately, if the general public shows interest in the project, it could eventually trump various decades-old issues with the Brat Pack moniker, but that is not a guarantee.
