The Annecy International Animation Film Festivalin France showcased 20 minutes of‘The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim’on Tuesday. According toVariety, the film received a “thunderous applause” during its presentation. We will have to wait and see, but beyond the style, the movie is shaping up to be one of the most successful releases in late 2024 in cinemas worldwide.

This year, fans ofThe Lord of the Ringshave much to look forward to on both the small and big screens. In addition to the second season of The Rings of Power, Middle-earth will embrace animation inThe Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim.

This prequel film is set about two centuries beforeBilbo Bagginsfound a certain little ring with the power to once again bring all of Arda to the brink of the abyss. Kenji Kamiyama, a prolific animator known for series like Eden of the East and Ghost in the Shell, directs this film with a screenplay by Jeffrey Addiss and Will Matthews.

The Lord of the Rings Will Return To Theaters

The story centers on Héra, the daughter of Helm Hammerhand, the legendary King of Rohan. It is worth noting that this character does not exist as such in the Legendarium, as it is only mentioned that Helm had “a daughter,” without delving into too many details in Tolkien’s material.

This week,the Annecy International Animation Film Festivalis taking place, whereWarner Bros. Animation and New Line Cinema have showcased nearly 20 minutes ofThe Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim.According to Variety, the audience was thrilled with what the studio showed, giving a resounding ovation to Kamiyama, who was present for a brief discussion after the screening with Andy Serkis, who is preparing another Lord of the Rings movie.

The star who playedGollumin Peter Jackson’s two trilogies and will reprise the role in the film he will direct, The Hunt of Gollum, was clear about what was shown in Annecy: “Fans are going to go crazy for this.”

The good news is that the wait won’t be excessively long, asThe Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrimis set to premiere in theaters on July 18, 2025.
