In an old interview, Howard talked about how to make games for everyone, including non-gamers. He talked about how difficult this is and how only a few titles have achieved this goal. He also mentioned another big IP that achieved this, aside from the latest,The Elder Scrolls.

In past decades, this was not so complicated because the budget was moderated and the chance to make a hit was at least a bit easier. One of the greatest minds behind various games that were total hits wasTodd Howard.
With IPs likeFallout,Skyrim, andWolfenstein, the man behind Bethesda has a pretty good reputation with games, being a trustworthy face behind these studios.In previous interviews, he mentioned numerous key points that were critical to gaining the popularity and respect that this studio has. He mentioned how the latestElder Scrollsgame reached a level of popularity that few games likeMinecrafthave achieved, where almost everyone knows what it is. He said the following:
You never know how your work is going to be received, and to have it be not just received by the people who wanted it or knew about it or our traditional fan base, which is pretty big, but also having it spill over to everybody who plays games, and then those people telling everybody else who doesn’t play games. That’s what it became.
Howard also said that word of mouth was a huge reason why this game was more popular every year. He said:
There are other games you might put in front of somebody and say,“I know you don’t traditionally play games, but you’ve got to check this out.” Then it sucks those people in as well.
He knows how this kind of recognition can help upcoming games become even more popular.
