PlayStation gamers can now rate games on a five-star scale, as Sony just launched a feature for their consoles that uses a new rating system. While this could help new PlayStation owners decide which games to look for by filtering according to the ratings left by other gamers, this could also backfire for titles with the risk of being review-bombed.
Review bombing isn’t new as several new titles have faced backlash in the form of negative reviews on Metacritic, which eventually pulled the titles down the charts. There are a few caveats left by Sony when it comes to rating games, which should hopefully prevent games from meaningless negative reviews.
Gamers Have Received This New Feature For PlayStation 4 and 5
The new feature that helps gamers rate games to their liking has gone live for PlayStation 4 and 5, although it’s not clear when exactly the update arrived. To leave a rating, gamers can head into the PS Store and choose the game they would like to rate. Once selected, they can choose View Product, and the game’s current rating should appear beneath the game’s logo on the left side. Clicking on the rating will allow gamers to leave their own rating for the game.

The rating screen for the game on the screen will also display a percentage breakdown of how many people voted for each score between 5 to 1. Gamers will only be able to leave a rating for games purchased downloaded or added via PlayStation Plus.
Since this update has just started rolling out, it might not yet appear for everyone but it should roll out eventually over the next couple of days.
Games Getting Review-Bombed Might Be Troublesome for Developers
PlayStation titles in the past have gotten review-bombed for the wrong reasons, bringing their Metacritic scores down. Just earlier this year,Horizon Forbidden Westreceived the game’s only DLC,Burning Shores.WhileHorizon Forbidden Westcame out on PlayStation 4, the DLC was a PlayStation 5 exclusive which caused quite a stir in itself. To add to that, the DLC ends with, spoilers alert, Aloy coming out to Sekya and both characters confessing their feelings to each other.

Sadly, gamers took to review-bomb the game, although the DLC was perfect in every sense and the game itself was highly praised and critically acclaimed. Similar fears were shared by fans as well, who hope Sony could implement a way to filter out review bombers. Sony, in turn, has implemented the rating system solely for those who have the game they wish to rate, in their library. This could hugely filter out those with the malicious intent of mass reviewing a game negatively.

Metacritic, on the other hand, suffers a lot from review bombing as there’s no check in place. Users can create an account to choose a platform and game to leave a rating and comment which is mostly never checked before they get posted.Starfieldwas heavily review-bombed on Metacritic with most of the negative ratings containing comments that were not directly related to the game or gameplay.
